week 9 - cowley fieldwork

Vintage 1976 VW Beetle

The five senses can be used as a basis for how this image can affect a person. From the worries created by the thought of touching such delicate paint but also knowing that the rust could cut straight through your skin. The smell of the rain with a slight hint of rust was accompanied by the busy road traffic sounds. The sight of such a cared-for yet still almost falling apart creates emotions as well as questions. Neither of these are technically senses yet they are just as unavoidable. The image produces emotions of the owner's pride, their love towards the car was undeniably the strongest emotion.

The fascination of passersby further pushes the idea of the true effect of this car on this road, it could be described as an attraction. Several expressed their interest in how the car got there, or who owned it; these were questions I had thought of too but there were more questions I had. How long has the owner had this car? What is their connection with the car? How does this car make the owner feel? Is there a reason that it is not in the greatest condition? Does it still drive like it did the first time?

All these questions could be answered through methods such as interviews, observations, ethnographic work, as well as creating relationships with the people in the area of interest. Often locals have their own stories about things surrounding them, such as the car.
